Neuro-Muscular Electrical Stimulation Therapy

estim

Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation (NMES) or Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) is used to provide sensory and motor input via a mild, intermittent electrical current. The small electrical current is generated from a small hand-held device, and directed through electrodes that are placed on the skin to target specific muscles. The main aim of NMES is to stimulate or relax a target muscle, increase sensory awareness and/or correct the timing of poorly functioning muscles. NMES should not hurt, but it should feel ‘tingly’ and a muscle could ‘twitch’ in response to this stimulus.

Overall, the research evidence supports the use of NMES as a beneficial intervention for improving gross motor function, muscle strength, and gait in children with spastic Cerebral Palsy. NMES should be used as part of an overall therapy plan including exercise, orthotics and education to assist a child to move in better alignment. It is a safe and non-invasive treatment that can be hugely beneficial if used under clinical supervision.  Talk to Jenny further to discuss whether this is a tool that could benefit your child's treatment.
